I'm an engineer. That comparison photo of the Three Gorges Dam between 2010 and 2020 was SCARY . I can't see why China doesn't think there's a serious problem. Thanks Mark Lundeen.
While the Chinese may not see any evidence of failure on the surface, it could very well be a sign that the rock underneath the dam is starting to fail. This could be an engineering issue rather than a construction one. Whatever the cause, serious action is needed and quick.
Engineering as science necessarily involves learning from mistakes. Much about the Three Gorges Dam was unprecedented in size and the amount of water it retained. Now with serious flooding in China they are pushing the boundaries of what is knowledge and what are guesses. Back in the 19th century boiler explosions were common disasters. I took many years before engineers learned how to design ones that don't explode easily.
