Topic: Look at China

I'm an engineer. That comparison photo of the Three
Gorges Dam between 2010 and 2020 was SCARY .  I
can't see why China doesn't think there's a serious
problem. Thanks Mark Lundeen.

While the Chinese may not see any evidence of
failure on the surface, it could very well be a sign
that the rock underneath the dam is starting to
fail. This could be an engineering issue rather than
a construction one. Whatever the cause, serious
action is needed and quick.

Engineering as science necessarily involves learning
from mistakes. Much about the Three Gorges Dam was
unprecedented in size and the amount of water it
retained. Now with serious flooding in China they
are pushing the boundaries of what is knowledge and
what are guesses.  Back in the 19th century boiler
explosions were common disasters. I took many years
before engineers learned how to design ones that
don't explode easily.

  Hi
thanks for your thoughts on China.
Mark did a great job with that one.
Pretty scary stuff.
