Back in the 1850's a major solar storm struck the earth. The "Carrington Event" caused major disruptions in telegraphy to the extent some equipment and lines actually caught fire. As I write this a major solar storm is headed our way and should strike the earth this afternoon. Will it be as powerful as the Carrington Event? Let' hope not as it would wreak havoc on our electrical grid and lots of other electronics besides. As such it would be the most serious disaster the planet has faced .
