Recommended reading for anyone who has not already done so:

"Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds"  by Charles MacKay

First published in 1841, and still available in print (check Amazon).  It is a collection of case studies about stupid things whole populations have believed in. The first 3 chapters are especially illuminating in light of recent (and forthcoming) economic calamities. Reflect on the sum total of these case studies and you realize why such horrors as genocide happen throughout human history. People are capable of doing stupid things when all evidence to the contrary says stop.
