Your quotation can be found in the Napoleon Hill
classic tome "Think and Grow Rich".  Where Hill got
it from is not mentioned (he interviewed hundreds of
people researching his book).  Another one from that
same famous book that I have found to be
particularly true:

"I bargained with life for a penny,
Life would pay no more,
No matter how I begged at evening,
When I counted my scanty store.

I work for a menial's hire,
Only to learn dismayed,
That any wage I had asked of life,
Life would have willingly paid."

Oh how the mighty have fallen!

I note that you found the real author of your quote.

When I read your response to my comment it seemed
like you were unfamiliar with Napoleon Hill.
Supposedly Andrew Carnegie hired him to go out and
interview successful people, armed with a letter of
introduction from him. Then distill that research
into a formula for success. The result was "Think
and Grow Rich"

I hadn't heard much about Napoleon Hill and his tome
"Think and Grow Rich" lately so I looked him up on
Wikipedia and was shocked to see that he is now
considered to be a fraud.

First published in 1937, I read it over and over in
high school and college as 50 years ago his book was
considered a classic self help book found in any
book store. Right along with Dale Carnegie's "How To
Win Friends and Influence People".  Folks like
Stephen Covey were seen as johnny-come-lately
imitations. His book was often cited by serious
publications as the one great book on success.
Considered required reading in many businesses at
that time.

Alas while you can still find the book on Amazon,
but I am dismayed that he has fallen from favor.
Many of the folks he supposedly interviewed were
still alive when the book was published, yet there
were never any denials by them.
